Three Sentenced Over UK Election-Date Insider Bets

Bar chart of suspended custodial sentences handed down on 23 October 2026: Anthony Lee 10 months 2 weeks, Amy Hind 6 months, Laura Lee 4 months 2 weeks, each suspended for 12 months

Three people who bet on the date of the 2024 UK General Election using confidential information have received suspended prison sentences. Anthony Lee, the Conservative Party’s former Director of Campaigning, his wife Laura Lee and former party employee Amy Hind were sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on 23 October 2026, the Gambling Commission said. All three had pleaded guilty to cheating under section 42 of the Gambling Act 2005. The regulator, which brought the prosecution itself, called it “a significant case and a first of its kind for the Commission”.

The sentences

Anthony Lee received 10 months and two weeks on each count, to run concurrently, suspended for 12 months, plus 100 hours of unpaid work. Laura Lee received four months and two weeks, suspended for 12 months, plus 40 hours of unpaid work. Amy Hind received six months, suspended for 12 months, plus 50 hours of unpaid work. All three are on probation for 12 months and are barred from using online gambling apps for the same period. Anthony and Laura Lee must each pay £1,000 in prosecution costs; no costs order was made against Hind. According to the BBC’s court report, Anthony Lee was also ordered to pay more than £6,600 in compensation to a betting company and Laura Lee £4,265.

How the bets were placed

Then Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the 4 July election date on 22 May 2024. Before that, the date had been planned at 10 Downing Street and Conservative Campaign Headquarters, while bookmakers offered markets on when the election would be held. Anthony Lee was party to the confidential discussions, used the information to bet and passed it to his wife, the party’s Head of International and a candidate at that election. Hind, by then working for the NHS, bet after receiving confidential information about the date.

The BBC reported from court that the couple began betting on a July election, or one between July and September, after a private Downing Street meeting on 10 March 2024. Anthony Lee placed or tried to place 71 bets and Laura Lee placed eight and attempted a ninth; the couple stood to win more than £23,000. Hind placed four bets and made three unsuccessful attempts of £767, £700 and £750. The judge noted that her largest previous stake had been £10.50.

More cases to come

The Commission charged 15 people in April 2025 after an investigation opened in June 2024. Former MP Craig Williams, then Sunak’s parliamentary private secretary, pleaded guilty on 29 June 2026 and will be sentenced later; the Lees pleaded guilty on 10 September. Ten other defendants are due to stand trial in September 2027 and January 2028. “Betting markets must be fair and must not be undermined by people using confidential information for their own benefit,” said Katharine Diamond, the Commission’s General Counsel.

Why it matters for GambleFi

Insider betting on political events is now a live issue for prediction markets as well as bookmakers. In the US the CFTC is probing candidates who traded on their own races, and Taiwan has blocked Kalshi over election markets. This UK case shows the criminal route: the bets were placed with bookmakers, and the prosecution came under gambling law, not financial-markets law. Onchain venues settled in stablecoins or an iGaming token, also called a GambleFi token, leave a public record of every walletrecord every wallet, which makes such patterns easier to trace, not harder.rsquo;s trades. Our Polymarket report covers where political trading now happens, and the GambleFi FAQ covers the basics. This is a news report, not legal or gambling advice.
